Happy National Puzzle Day!

Discuss on the Puzzlehead forums

You say you’ve never heard of National Puzzle Day? Don’t be surprised. It’s just one of a long list of obscure holiday celebrations. Lists of these wacky holidays are readily available online.

Listed below are 300 obscure holidays in random order: 286 of them are real, 14 are fake. Find the fake ones, and you’ll be able to determine the coordinates of the final location of a geocache I placed to celebrate this holiday. Here’s how:

Take the 14 fake holidays and list them in alphabetical order. Count the number of letters in each holiday – ignore spaces, numbers, symbols, and punctuation marks. Divide the number of letters in each holiday by 10 and take the remainder. The remainder is the value for that holiday.

Here’s an example. Suppose the holiday is National “Beam Me Up, Scotty” Day. There are 25 letters in the name of that holiday – the remainder when you divide by 10 is 5, so 5 is the value for that holiday. An easy way to remember is that the remainder is always the right-most digit in the number of letters.

If you’ve done those three steps correctly, the numbers in order will be the coordinates for the final location of this cache.

My reference is a source which verified the origin of each and every holiday (and literally hundreds more). But here’s one way to kinda sorta test a holiday to see if it’s real or fake: enter the name of the holiday “surrounded in quotes, like this” into Google. If you get no matches, then it’s probably fake – Google will say “No results found for [your holiday name]“.

Good luck, and Happy Puzzle Day!

About ePeterso2

Who I Am ePeterso2I’m Eric Peterson, and my email address is epeterso2@puzzlehead.org. I’m a software engineer who lives in a suburb of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I’ve enjoyed solving puzzles for years, and a few years ago I began constructing puzzles of my own. If you’re ever in Broward County and would like to get together some time, please send me a note by email and let me know. I love the opportunity to meet with other puzzleheads, especially if it involves lunch. Puzzle Testing I believe that the best way to make a puzzle even better is to ask someone else to solve it. You learn so much about how people think, how people approach your puzzle, pitfalls they may encounter, and outright errors in your construction by having someone else try it before you unleash it upon the world. If you’re a puzzle constructor, I would be honored to test your puzzle for you. Send me email with your puzzle or a link to it, and I’ll try solving it, as long as I have time available to do so. I’m a busy guy, so my time is limited … but I’m always open to a challenge. Most of the bugs that caused ePeterso1 to go haywire have been corectted in ePeterso2.
